Overall, the seating was adaptable and comfortable for both driver and passenger.A fine, fun ride, just a little short on the juice. The sound system is fine (XM Satellite radio is an option), the three-knob A/C and heat system do a good job and the overall dash treatment is pretty nice – the steering wheel (and its set of cruise and audio fingertip controls) was also oddly aesthetically pleasing. The front passenger seat folds completely flat to allow you to carry ladders and 2x4s rear seats slide for passenger comfort and also flop down in a 60/40 configuration. Two extra cupholders do pop out of the armrest if needed. On the floor beneath this column and slightly underneath the elevated center armrest is the emergency brake handle, a single floor-mounted cupholder, an AC power outlet and a vertical stack for holding CDs – familiarize yourself with this arrangement or you might not be able to find the e-brake in a real emergency.

For instance, there’s a totally funky configuration to the space where the central column would ordinarily be: rather, the shift column juts out into space on a small, knee-height stand with the window controls on its lower edge, making it a bit frustrating to instinctively remember how to raise and lower the windows.

It was so black on black (black plastic, black fabric on the seats and door inserts) that I completely missed out on a few functions until my final inspection. The rest of the interior is also a little interesting. The shelf is edged with grocery bag hooks or can be flipped over and used to carry muddy or wet stuff like ski boots, then cleaned out while it adds some functionality, the protruding towers also take up a lot of floor room that would ordinarily be available with the seats folded flat, so it’s a trade-off. A large rear gate sits atop a rubberized bumper topper, making it easy to load your gear or stand up and adjust bikes and such on the rack inside, there’s a curious two-sided luggage shelf that can be positioned at various heights between two tall columns over the rear shocks – with small storage bins on the tops of the boxes themselves.

A nice, gently arched angle to the window line ensures good views of the road the side panels feature dynamic contour lines and a black plastic protrusion at floor level, and there’s large wheel well space for, well, again, the articulated backcountry exploring that we all know Torrent owners will not be doing with this vehicle. Up-front looks are pleasant, with dual, mesh-covered and chrome outlined Pontiac nostril grills and a skid plate that … whoa, on closer inspection turns out to be silver-painted, rubbery plastic … so don’t go too crazy in the backcountry. Style is a slightly more interesting variation on SUV standards, with shiny, five-spoke, 17-inch alloy wheels, body-colored mirrors, large and friendly looking headlamps and brakelight clusters, chrome-edged fog lamps and the aforementioned roof rack as an option. The flabby acceleration and generally lackadaisical handling are too bad, because the Torrent is otherwise a well-designed machine with some fun toys and a reasonably comfortable ride. And while that’s not necessarily Yugo territory, it does lend itself to a feeling of being a little sluggish in regular traffic and prone to dragging on long passes and hill climbs, given the relative size of the vehicle.I got no real sense of joy during takeoffs and had to stomp on the gas pretty fiercely to harness some passing power (it was there, but the pedal was way down to the metal) coupled with steering that felt heavy and indistinct, the Torrent was one of those vehicles that I was never able to intuitively guess proper highway speed – every time I looked down I was loping along at 60 miles per hour and had to punch it a bit to get up to highway speed. The Torrent and Equinox share a 3.4 liter V6 that produces just 185 horsepower, matched to a five-speed automatic transmission. The problem is performance, even with “sport tuned” suspension and the functional safety of an on-demand all-wheel drive system. Torrent serves up good looks and fine details, an adequate package of perks (including some adaptable if not slightly unusual seating and cargo containment combinations) and good room for five, not to mention a functional roof rack system for your bikes and skis. You may not have consciously noticed the quiet disappearance of the Pontiac Aztek, one ugly creature if there ever was (although the pop-out tent in the rear was a nice idea for incredibly simple car camping) as the Beatles said, that bird has flown. In its place, and offering up a pleasant if not slightly underpowered variation on the lite-SUV theme, is the Pontiac Torrent, a somewhat upscale reconfiguration of the popular and dynamic Chevrolet Equinox.
